Bo Fang

Dr. Bo Fang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington. He directs the Next-generation EXascale and Quantum systems (NEXQ) lab at UTA. His research spans two main areas: Quantum Computing Systems and Resilient HPC and AI Systems. The first area covers quantum-HPC driven scientific discovery, large-scale quantum circuit simulation, quantum noise characterization and mitigation, and quantum machine learning. The second area covers error resilience and fault injection for HPC, GPU, and machine learning workloads, fault tolerance for large language model training and inference, and precision-aware reliability for mixed-precision hardware. His work has appeared at prestigious HPC, dependability, and quantum venues, including SC, ASPLOS, PPoPP, HPDC, ICS, IPDPS, DSN, and ICML.

He received his Ph.D. from the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of British Columbia, advised by Prof. Karthik Pattabiraman and Prof. Matei Ripeanu, and his B.Eng. from Wuhan University, China. Prior to UT Arlington, he was a staff computer scientist in the HPC group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL).

He is the recipient of the William C. Carter PhD Dissertation Award in Dependability (2020), an honourable mention of the 2020 SIGHPC Doctoral Dissertation Award, and the Exceptional Contribution Award of the HPC group at PNNL (2022). His research won the best paper award at IEEE Cluster 2022 and the best paper runner-up at ACM ICS 2025.

Openings

The NEXQ lab has openings for self-motivated Ph.D. students to work on quantum computing systems and resilient HPC/AI systems. [Jul. 2026] : Our paper “Quantum Sampling Architecture for Protein Structure Reconstruction on Utility-Scale Hardware” is accepted to SC ‘26!

[Jun. 2026] : Our research is supported by the NVIDIA Academic Grant Program!

[May. 2026] : Our VeriHGN paper on heterogeneous graph-based congestion prediction for chip layout verification is accepted to KDD ‘26 and selected for oral presentation!

[2026] : I am serving as the program co-chair of the ICPP ‘26 quantum track.

[Nov. 2025] : Two papers are presented at SC ‘25: “Demystifying the Resilience of Large Language Model Inference: An End-to-End Perspective” and “QDockBench: A Protein-Ligand Docking Benchmark on Utility-Level Quantum Computers”.

[Aug. 2025] : I joined the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington as a tenure-track Assistant Professor.
